A vitrectomy is a retina-specific surgery that is performed on an outpatient basis and involves the removal of the vitreous gel within the eye in order to repair an injury. During the procedure, a gas bubble or silicone oil bubble is placed into the eye to hold the retina flat during healing. Following a series of eye examinations and less invasive treatment methods, Eye Health Vision Centers may perform a vitrectomy to treat or repair:

Vitrectomy procedures are performed at our Dartmouth, MA facility or at the New Bedford Surgicenter. Your ophthalmologist will perform your vitrectomy using numbing eye drops and possible IV or general anesthesia, depending on the circumstance. You will also be monitored with an IV, an EKG, and oxygen and blood pressure sensors during the procedure. Once you are anesthetized and comfortable, your surgeon will clean your eyes with an antiseptic solution and use an eyelid speculum to hold the eye open. Using microscopic, specialized instruments, your surgeon will remove the vitreous gel from your eye, repair retinal tears or detachments, seal off holes, and perform any additional repairs before inserting a silicone gel or air bubble and patching the eye for healing.

Before and after your surgery, our team will work closely with you to ensure you understand aftercare and follow-up instructions. You will need to sleep upright after your surgery so the necessary pressure can be placed on the retina via the silicone or air bubble. Upright sleeping chairs can be rented if need be. We will also schedule your follow-up appointments before you leave to return home. It is important that you keep these appointments and attend each one so that our team can monitor your healing.
