About Traditional Surgery
To perform traditional cataract removal, a skilled surgeon will create a small incision on the side of the cornea. The surgeon will insert very small tools, creating an opening in the lens of the eye and breaking up the cataract before suctioning it out of the eye. An intraocular lens may be placed within the eye to replace the removed lens.
Eye Health Vision Centers will carry out a detailed examination and consultation before helping you decide which cataract treatment option best fits your lifestyle. During this appointment, the benefits and risks of traditional cataract surgery will be discussed, and your candidacy for each procedure can be determined. To learn more about our cataract treatment options, schedule a consultation at our Middletown, RI or Fairhaven, Fall River, Taunton, Dartmouth, or North Dartmouth, MA facility today.

While most individuals with cataracts are ideal candidates for traditional cataract removal surgery, there are a few exceptions. Patients who are in overall poor health, are pregnant or nursing, or have a preexisting eye disease are not ideal candidates for this procedure. In addition, there are certain medications that make vision surgery a bad idea for patients. During your consultation at Eye Health Vision Centers, an experienced ophthalmologist will assess your medical history, consider your lifestyle, and help determine whether this surgery is a good option for you.
What to Expect
Eye Health Vision Centers performs traditional cataract surgery at our Dartmouth, MA location and at the New Bedford Surgicenter. We will customize your procedure to meet your exact needs, but the standard cataract removal procedure is generally performed in three steps in an outpatient setting:
- Small incisions are made to allow the instrument to pass through
- Ultrasonic waves are used to break the cataract into small pieces before suctioning them away
- A new lens is inserted into the eye where the old lens once was
After your surgery, a member of our team will provide you with specific aftercare instructions that will include how to administer and how often to use your prescription eye drops. Your aftercare instructions and the number of follow-up appointments that will be scheduled will depend upon the recommendations of your surgeon. You may need to wear a protective shield over your eyes during your recovery to prevent damage from touching, rubbing, or scratching. It is important that you attend each follow-up appointment so our team can monitor your progress.
