About Ptosis Repair
Ptosis (TOE-sis) is a medical term for the drooping of the upper eyelid, which can affect one or both eyes. The condition is caused by a weakness or separation of muscles deep within the eyelid. It can be the result of aging or can develop because of an injury or surgery. The surgical correction of ptosis involves the repairing of the stretched tendon and can be performed by an ophthalmologist during a minimally invasive oculoplastic procedure. Patients with excess skin around the eyelids may choose to combine this procedure with blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) for comprehensive results.
Our teams at Eye Health Vision Centers are skilled in performing both procedures and can have you seeing and feeling great in no time. Contact us today at our offices in Dartmouth, Fairhaven, Fall River, and Taunton, MA and Middletown, RI to learn more about your treatment options.
"Have had three appointments at this location and each time was pleasant. The ladies in the front are so polite and accommodating and the doctor was always prompt. Never waited more than 10 minutes after appointment time to be seen or had any bad experiences. I’ve even referred a few friends and family and they also love the location. Not sure why every other comment is so negative."- K.S. / Google / Jul 18, 2019

An ideal candidate for ptosis repair is suffering from droopy eyelids and wishes to correct the condition with the help of a skilled and experienced eye surgeon. In severe cases, patients may struggle to keep their eyes open and the condition may affect their field of vision. To find out if ptosis repair is the right surgery for you, schedule a consultation at one of our greater South Coast area facilities at your earliest convenience.
Eye Health Vision Centers provides ptosis repair surgery at our Dartmouth, MA location and at the New Bedford Surgicenter. Ptosis repair is typically performed quickly using local anesthesia and/or IV sedation. The procedure is fast and effective, and you will be able to return home the same day. Incisions are commonly placed in the back of the eyelid to reduce scarring but may be made on top of the lid if necessary. Using the small incisions, your surgeon will reattach the muscle to the eyelid cartilage before closing the incisions with dissolvable sutures. The stitches should dissolve on their own in 10 days or less following the surgery. Patients may want to begin applying cold compresses to the treated area immediately following.
You should plan to take 1 – 2 weeks off of work and temporarily refrain from rigorous activities during your recovery from ptosis surgery. Before you leave to return home, a member of our team will take the time to give detailed aftercare instructions and may provide you with prescription medications, which should be filled and used as directed. Patients will also be scheduled for a follow-up appointment within 5 – 7 days of surgery so healing can be monitored. Please be sure to keep any scheduled follow-up appointments and closely follow all aftercare instructions to expedite your healing and reduce the possibility of infection.
