About Entro & Ectropion Eyelid

While it may not be highly common, entropion and ectropion are eyelid disorders that can cause discomfort and affect the overall health of your eyes and vision. The conditions are identified as eyelids that curl inward or outward, irritating the eye and leading to inflammation and even pain. But the talented team at Eye Health Vision Centers can help. Our ophthalmologists are experienced in the treatment of entropion and ectropion and can offer effective treatment that will address the underlying cause, as well as the symptoms. Read on to learn more about these conditions, then call and schedule a consultation at one of our greater South Coast-area facilities. We can provide a proper diagnosis and discuss your treatment plan at out locations in Middletown, RI and Fairhaven, Fall River, Taunton, and Dartmouth, MA.

Entropion

Entropion affects the lower eyelid, causing the eyelid(s) to turn inward toward the surface of the eye, which can cause the eyelashes and lid to rub against the eye, causing discomfort and pain. This may lead to chronic red eyes and the overproduction of tears.

Ectropion

Ectropion causes the lower eyelid to turn outward, which reveals too much of the eye and tissue within, leading to burning, excessive tear production, and red eye. Patients often report a constant burning sensation associated with ectropion.

Best Candidates

You may consider scheduling an appointment for a consultation to learn more about treatment if you are experiencing these symptoms. Ideal candidates for the treatment of entropion or ectropion lid correction often experience the following:

  • Inflammation or infection on the eyelid
  • Muscular weakness around the eyes
  • Irregular curvature of the eyelids
  • A damaged facial nerve or muscle
  • Trauma or injury to the eyes
  • The presence of a benign or cancerous growth around the eyes

Procedure Technique

Eye Health Vision Centers performs all surgeries, including entropion and ectropion eyelid repair, at our Dartmouth, MA facility or at the New Bedford Surgicenter. The most effective treatment for entropion and ectropion is this surgery. Our team may prescribe a pain relieving eye drop to be used while waiting for your scheduled surgery. Using a minor, oculoplastic surgical technique, our ophthalmologists can gently reshape your eyelid on an outpatient basis in an hour or less. After administering a local anesthetic, one of our experienced surgeons will recreate the natural curvature of the eyelid to restore it to a normal resting position. If necessary, a small section of tissue may need to be removed to provide optimal results. This procedure will be highly customized to your specific needs so that the final result is aesthetically pleasing and your visual health is improved.

Follow-Up

Before you leave our facility after surgery, a member of our team will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions and schedule a series of follow-up appointments. It is important that you attend each visit and closely adhere to the instructions given to you following surgery. You will have stitches in your eyelid that will need to be removed at a later date and our team will help monitor the progress of your healing up to that point. In the future, you could experience a relapse of ectropion or entropion due to the natural loss of elasticity that takes place as we age. Maintain regular eye examinations at our optical center so that we can help keep an eye on the condition of your eyelids.
