About Hyperopia

Farsightedness, also known as hyperopia, affects a fourth of the U.S. population and is classified as an individual's inability to focus on images or objects close-up. Those with farsightedness can often see well from a distance, but objects that are nearby may appear blurry. Not only can farsightedness decrease an individual's range of vision, but it can also cause an array of other unpleasant symptoms that can decrease your quality of life. Our team of highly skilled optometrists provides vision tests and eye exams to help detect farsightedness and treat it effectively. To schedule your eye exam, contact Eye Health Vision Centers in Fairhaven, Fall River, Dartmouth, and Taunton, MA and Middletown, RI. We can help you get one step closer to clearer vision.

Symptoms

Because of the constant eye strain that farsightedness can cause if left untreated, the condition often leads to headaches and fatigue. It can also cause burning and aching in the eyes. Patients with farsightedness typically experience general eye discomfort when reading, writing, or using the computer. Those who have already been diagnosed with farsightedness but are still experiencing symptoms, even while wearing eyeglasses or contact lenses, should schedule an eye exam at Eye Health Vision Centers to see if their prescription needs to be adjusted.

Causes

A shorter than normal eye is the cause of farsightedness and most commonly present at birth. In some cases, children outgrow the condition as their eyes continue to develop during their adolescent years. Farsightedness tends to be most common in children with a family history of the condition. Occasionally, farsightedness is confused with presbyopia (age-related vision decline), but the two are separate conditions with different causes.

Treatment Options

Treatment options at Eye Health Vision Centers range from prescription eyeglasses and contact lenses to laser vision correction surgery, which can help to diminish or reduce your need for corrective eyewear long-term. A skilled member of our team will discuss each treatment option and help you decide which is best for your lifestyle. If our team believes you could benefit from laser correction surgery, we will be glad to schedule you for a consultation with one of our experienced ophthalmologists.

Sharpen Your Vision

If you aren't seeing as clearly as you should be, you may have farsightedness. Farsightedness makes it difficult to focus on objects that are up-close and could, over time, cause more uncomfortable symptoms. At Eye Health Visions Centers, we perform comprehensive eye exams for our South Coast-area patients to diagnose farsightedness and offer advanced treatment options that will help you attain a higher quality of life and clearer vision.
